HORN One Health Masterclass 2019

Delegates of the 2019 HORN Masterclass event

The inaugural HORN One Health Masterclass was held on the ILRI campus in Nairobi from 25th November to 6th December 2019. Led by HORN Curriculum Lead Marie McIntyre, this residential event aimed to create an intensive research training for early career researchers based in the Horn of Africa including from Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Somaliland. Eighty-five delegates attended from 18 higher education and research institutes across the HORN region.

Focussed on One Health topics, the masterclass provided in-depth learning opportunities to increase knowledge in quantitative skills in epidemiology (e.g. statistics, mathematical modelling, epidemiology, GIS), social science approaches (e.g. qualitative interviewing, participatory epidemiology, questionnaire design, ethics, economics), and laboratory skills (e.g. pathogen diagnostics, bioinformatics, AMR).

Workshops were co-led and delivered by international co-investigators and University of Liverpool and Glasgow staff. The eLearning lessons “Bite-size e-learning for quantitative data analysis” and “Bite-size e-learning for Epidemiology” were also developed to introduce basic concepts preceding workshop delivery. Following dinner, evening sessions covered generic and transferable research skills.

Delegates commented:

I particularly enjoyed the practical observation and discussion as it really gave us a taste of the work
well-tailored, great pace and I loved the group discussions and the fieldwork!
given me a base from which to improve my knowledge and skills in statistical modelling

Many graduates of the Masterclass said that they will take their learning away and redeliver to colleagues – cascade training in practice!

Delivery of the masterclass follows the release of the first two tiers of eLearning for the HORN curriculum including (1) introducing One Health and (2) generic and transferable research skills. To access these materials you need to register as a member of the HORN website. You can do this here.
