Professor Imelda Bates


Imelda Bates is a clinical haematologist and an experienced research leader with a well-established international reputation for original research in public health issues on anaemia and blood transfusion.

Prof Imelda BatesWith over 30 years’ experience of managing multi-disciplinary teams and multi-site research in low income countries, predominantly in Africa, Imelda established and leads the Capacity Research Unit at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), which is at the forefront of innovative research into the science of capacity strengthening, focusing on capacity for research and for laboratory systems.

Her current research activities focus on anaemia and blood transfusion systems in low to middle income countries, particularly on evidence to improve the supply and use of blood for transfusion.

Imelda is the Course Director for the innovative and highly successful Diploma in Project Design and Management which was established in Ghana in 2003 to increase multi-disciplinary institutional research capacity; she supervises several PhD students and teaches on many of LSTM’s on-site courses including Diploma and Masters Programmes and a Consultancy course.
