Professor Bassirou Bonfoh

Profile

Bassirou Bonfoh holds a DVM and a PhD in epidemiology. Having worked for five years in West Africa as a livestock development programme coordinator for Vétérinaires Sans Frontières, he undertook a four year epidemiology postdoctoral fellowship at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute on health risks and determinants of dairy sector development.

Following this, for a Prof Bassirou Bonfoh, HORN Project External Advisory Board Memberfour year period, he led a research group on “Avenues of extensive pastoral production system” in the Horn Africa, West Africa and Central Asia. By using the framework of the Swiss National Competence in Research North-South, he contributed to validate the One Health concept on risk analysis and zoonosis control at human, animal and environment interface (e.g. brucellosis in Kyrgyzstan).

Since 2009, he is the Managing Director of Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d’Ivoire www.csrs.ch where he leads the North-South science diplomacy. He is also the Director of the consortium Afrique One www.afriqueoneaspire.net contributing to the capacity of 60 fellows in the area of zoonotic diseases.  B. Bonfoh is a guest lecturer at University of Lomé (Togo), University of Liège (Belgium), University of Basel (Switzerland), University of Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) and at the Pan African veterinary school in Senegal and a member of the scientific advisory board of several agriculture and health research institutes and initiatives in Africa.
